The following expectations apply to musicians in the three above ensembles:
(SUNY Students should consult their course syllabus for additional details)
Attendance -- Musicians are expected to participate per their commitment. The honor of your word and your reputation is yours alone to protect; and while missing a rehearsal is not the worst thing in the world, not being where you're expected to be is a very public indication of your dependability. It hurts the ensemble when players are missing from rehearsals, so just be there when you are expected to be. And when life unexpectedly interrupts your plans, that is understandable.-- but by all means contact the conductor as soon as practicable. And if you have a folder of music that will be needed by other musicians, and you cannot attend, you are expected to make sure that the music still gets there.
Musicianship -- All three of the orchestras above are community ensembles, which means that everyone is welcome and enouraged to participate (space permitting). It's okay if you're struggling with your instrument, and the music is too hard. Play what you can, and keep trying your best. You are encouraged to play in rehearsals, even if you don't feel comfortable performing concerts. Help and encouragement will always be afforded to those who keep trying; and the same attitude is generally found in any community ensemble. If we each just do our best, then we are sure to enjoy making beautiful music together.
Equipment -- At the SUNY schools, there are plenty of music stands, but there is only a limited supply of them for the Cortlandt Chamber Orchestra. For those playing in the CCO, it's a good idea to have a music stand in your car in case you need it. All three groups provide folders of music for musicians to take home and practice. This music is expected to be kept neat and undamaged, and returned at the concert. Percussion equipment is generally available for each ensemble, but percussionists may prefer to bring their own sticks/mallets.
Concert Dress -- Unless otherwise noted, concert dress is tuxedos or dark suits (with black bow ties, and with black shoes and socks), and dresses or similarly appropriate semi-formal apparel.-- Think: "Sunday Best", but in black. A small accent of color or white (like a vest, or a scarf) is fine. Short skirts and flashy clothing is distracting, and best to be avoided. Also, colognes and perfumes should not be used, as they can bother other instrumentallists.
The following ensembles are volunteer or professional as noted.
If known, a contact person and email is listed so you can get more information about playing in that particular ensemble.
